How to Transition Cat Food?

When changing cat food, sudden transitions can upset your cat's digestive system and cause problems such as diarrhea and vomiting. Therefore, veterinarians recommend a 7-10 day transition period when switching from old food to new food.

7-Day Food Transition Plan

  • Days 1-2: 75% old food + 25% new food
  • Days 3-4: 50% old food + 50% new food
  • Days 5-6: 25% old food + 75% new food
  • Day 7: 100% new food

10-Day Food Transition Plan (Recommended)

A 10-day transition plan is recommended for more sensitive cats or cats with sensitive digestive systems. This plan allows the digestive system to adapt to the new food more slowly.

  • Days 1-3: 75% old food + 25% new food
  • Days 4-6: 50% old food + 50% new food
  • Days 7-9: 25% old food + 75% new food
  • Day 10: 100% new food

Things to Consider During Food Transition

  • Observe your cat's appetite and stool condition daily. If you see diarrhea or vomiting, slow down the transition.
  • Mix the foods well and make sure your cat eats the mixture at each meal.
  • If your cat refuses the new food, you can extend the transition period even further.
  • If you see serious digestive problems in your cat, stop the transition and consult your veterinarian.
