How Much Food Should I Give My Cat Per Day?

How much food you should give your cat per day varies depending on your cat's weight, age, and whether it's neutered. Generally, an adult cat needs 20-30 calories per kilogram per day. For dry food, this equals approximately 5-7 grams of food per kilogram per day.

Food Amount by Cat Age

  • Kitten (0-1 years): Kittens need 2-3 times more calories than adult cats because they are in the growth period. Approximately 15-20 grams of food per kilogram should be given per day.
  • Adult (1-7 years): For adult cats, 5-7 grams of dry food per kilogram per day is sufficient. For example, a 4 kg cat should be given 20-28 grams of food per day.
  • Senior (7+ years): Senior cats should be given slightly less food as their metabolism slows down. 4-6 grams of food per kilogram per day may be sufficient.

Food Amount for Neutered Cats

Neutered cats have slower metabolism and increased tendency to obesity. Therefore, neutered cats should be given 20-30% less food than normal cats. For example, if a normal cat needs to eat 60 grams of food per day, this amount should be 42-48 grams for a neutered cat.

How Long Does 1 kg Cat Food Last?

How long 1 kg of cat food lasts depends on your cat's daily food consumption. If an average 4 kg adult cat eats approximately 25 grams of food per day, 1 kg of food lasts approximately 40 days. A 2 kg package lasts approximately 80 days, and a 10 kg package lasts approximately 400 days (more than 1 year).
